What is ChatGPT Work?
ChatGPT Work is an agent mode in ChatGPT that turns a goal into finished work. It splits a task into steps, uses your apps and returns a file or site.
OpenAI launched it on 10 July 2026, powered by GPT-5.6 and Codex, according to launch coverage. Pro, Enterprise and Edu users got web access first. It is live in October 2026.
Key Features
- Long-running tasks: ChatGPT Work can stay with one project for hours and split it into smaller steps. It keeps context throughout the workflow, so you do not need to re-explain the goal at each stage.
- Finished outputs: The agent produces documents, spreadsheets, presentations and interactive web apps. Launch coverage lists examples such as budget variance analysis, sales meeting preparation and weekly executive dashboards.
- Sites: Sites turns finished work into interactive dashboards, trackers and reports shared by URL. Launch coverage says these pages can update when the underlying data changes, which suits live project trackers.
- Built-in browser: A built-in browser lets the agent research the web and compare sources during a task. A Chrome extension adds a sidebar, so the agent can also work inside pages you already have open.
- Computer Use: Computer Use lets the desktop app click, type and move files on Mac and Windows. It runs only after you grant permission, and it can reach local files and apps that plugins cannot.
- Scheduled Tasks: Scheduled Tasks run jobs once, on a repeat schedule or when something changes. Examples include refreshing a meeting agenda each morning or watching a website for updates.
- Plugin directory: One plugin directory connects Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs and project trackers. You can mention an app with @ to point the agent at a specific source.
- Local or cloud runs: Tasks can run locally on your computer or in the cloud across devices. Local runs reach desktop files directly, while cloud runs keep going and stay accessible from web and mobile.
- Admin controls: Enterprise and Edu admins set spend limits, group limits and individual overrides. They can also restrict plugins, browser use and network access, and review activity through a Compliance API.
Pros
- Complete deliverables: You receive usable files and sites rather than chat replies to assemble yourself. That saves the copy-and-format step that most assistants leave to the user.
- Wide app reach: Slack, Teams, Drive, SharePoint and Salesforce are covered through one directory. Work that spans a CRM, an inbox and a spreadsheet can stay inside a single task.
- Approval checks: The agent asks before important actions and lets you redirect it mid-task. OpenAI says an auto-review layer also checks significant steps before they run in connected systems.
- Recurring automation: Scheduled and event-triggered tasks keep reports current without fresh prompts. Launch coverage describes a Zapier marketer using it to review thousands of leads a month through weekly dashboards.
- Enterprise governance: Work builds on the security and compliance base of ChatGPT Enterprise. IT teams can control which tools, data and actions each group may use before rolling it out widely.
- Free desktop taste: Free users can try a limited version in the desktop app. That lets individuals test the agent on a small job before deciding whether a paid plan is worth it.
Cons
- Metered usage: Work is metered like Codex rather than standard chat messages. Complex tasks use more of your plan allowance, so long projects can exhaust a lower tier quickly.
- Unclear limits: OpenAI has not published exact Work quotas for each plan. Teams cannot easily forecast how many long tasks a month their subscription will cover before hitting a cap.
- Staged rollout: Access arrived in stages, with Pro, Enterprise and Edu users first and Plus and Business later. Features and limits may still differ between plans and platforms.
- Review still needed: Long autonomous runs can drift from your intent or include errors. Outputs need careful human checking before they reach clients, finance systems or leadership reports.
- Device dependency: Local tasks need your computer to stay on until they finish. Jobs meant to run overnight or away from the desk suit cloud execution instead.
- Self-reported safety figures: OpenAI says red-team tests blocked every attempt to extract protected data, but that figure comes from its own testing. Broader tool access still calls for audit trails and tight permissions.
Who is Using ChatGPT Work?
- Analysts: They build reports from scattered data.
- Operations teams: They automate recurring checks and summaries.
- Consultants: They draft decks and research briefs.
- Enterprise IT: They govern agent access to tools.

What Makes ChatGPT Work Unique?
Delivery of finished work, rather than answers, is the difference. Most assistants reply in text and leave assembly to you, while ChatGPT Work hands back a usable file or site.
