What is Replicate?
Replicate is a cloud platform for running machine learning models through an API, without managing servers or GPUs yourself. Developers pick a model from its public catalogue, call it with one line of code through the API, and pay only for the compute or outputs used. The platform also lets you fine-tune models on your own data and deploy private models packaged with Cog, its open-source tool.
Cloudflare announced on 17 November 2025 that it had agreed to acquire Replicate, citing a catalogue of more than 50,000 production-ready models, and said the deal was expected to close within two months. Two 2026 research reports state the acquisition completed in early 2026. Replicate says it will carry on as a distinct brand, that its API is not changing and that existing models will keep working, while its models are being made available to Cloudflare Workers AI users. Co-founder Ben Firshman was CEO at the time of the deal, and the service was live in October 2026.
Key Features
- Large model catalogue: Replicate hosts more than 50,000 models, according to Cloudflare’s acquisition announcement. The catalogue covers image generation, video, language models, speech and audio, with official and community models side by side.
- One-line API calls: Replicate lets you run any listed model with a single line of code, according to its homepage. Client libraries and a plain HTTP API return results without any machine learning setup.
- Fine-tuning: Replicate trains improved versions of supported models on your own data. The result becomes a new model better suited to a specific task, such as a consistent image style or subject.
- Cog for custom models: Replicate deploys your own models through Cog, an open-source tool for packaging machine learning code into containers. Once pushed, the model gets its own API endpoint on Replicate’s hardware.
- Automatic scaling: Replicate scales capacity up when traffic rises and back down when it falls. You do not need to provision GPUs in advance for a launch or traffic spike.
- Choice of GPU hardware: Replicate offers CPUs and Nvidia T4, L40S, A100 and H100 GPUs on self-serve pricing. Larger 4x and 8x configurations of A100, H100, H200 and L40S are available with committed spend contracts.
- Flexible billing per model: Replicate bills some models by hardware time and others by output, such as per image, per token or per second of video. FLUX Dev, for example, is listed at $0.025 per image.
- Web playground: Replicate includes a browser interface for testing models before writing code. You can try prompts, compare outputs and copy the matching API call into your project.
- Cloudflare Workers AI access: Replicate’s catalogue is being made available to Cloudflare Workers AI users following the agreed acquisition. Cloudflare says custom models and pipelines on its platform will draw on Replicate’s expertise.
Pros
- Fast route to open-source models: Replicate gives developers API access to thousands of open-source models with no infrastructure work. Reviewers describe it as one of the easiest ways to test many models quickly.
- No subscription required: Replicate charges only for what you use, with no monthly minimum on self-serve accounts. Prices are published per second of hardware and per output, which suits experiments and small projects.
- Custom models with Cog: Replicate lets teams publish their own models as APIs through the open-source Cog tool. This avoids building and maintaining separate serving infrastructure for every model a team ships.
- Scales with demand: Replicate scales automatically when a model receives heavy traffic. Small teams can launch an AI feature without planning GPU capacity, buying hardware or managing clusters.
- Stable API through the deal: Replicate has said its API and existing models will keep working after the Cloudflare deal. A 2026 review reports branding, API and pricing have stayed the same so far.
- Enterprise options available: Replicate offers a dedicated account manager, priority support, higher GPU limits and performance SLAs for larger customers. Volume discounts also apply once spending reaches substantial levels.
Cons
- Cold starts add delay: Replicate models that have been idle must boot before running, and reviewers report delays of 10 to 30 seconds or more. This makes some models unsuitable for real-time, user-facing features.
- Costs are hard to forecast: Replicate bills by the second, so cold starts and long runs add compute time you may not expect. Toolsforhumans advises monitoring spending from day one, especially at scale.
- Failed runs can still cost money: Replicate charges for compute time used, and one 2026 review notes failed runs still incur charges. Testing inputs carefully on small runs helps avoid paying for errors.
- Uneven community models: Replicate’s community models vary in quality and upkeep. Some are well maintained, while others may be outdated, so check activity and examples before building on one.
- Private models bill idle time: Replicate charges private models for setup, idle time and active processing on dedicated hardware, except fast-booting fine-tunes. Keeping a private model warm can become expensive.
- Ownership change brings uncertainty: Cloudflare agreed to buy Replicate, and reviewers note uncertainty over future pricing and product direction. Plans for closer Workers AI integration may change how some features work over time.
Who is Using Replicate?
- App developers: Add image, video, text or speech models to products through an API.
- Startups: Prototype AI features without buying or managing GPUs.
- Machine learning engineers: Package and deploy custom models with Cog.
- Creative and media teams: Fine-tune image models for a consistent style.
Pricing
Replicate uses pay-as-you-go pricing, billing some models by hardware time and others by output (official prices, October 2026).
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| CPU (Small) / CPU | $0.09/hr / $0.36/hr | Billed per second for light workloads |
| Nvidia T4 GPU | $0.81/hr ($0.000225/sec) | Entry GPU for smaller models |
| Nvidia L40S GPU | $3.51/hr ($0.000975/sec) | Mid-range GPU, also offered as 2x for $7.02/hr |
| Nvidia A100 (80GB) / H100 | $5.04/hr / $5.49/hr | High-end GPUs; 2x A100 is $10.08/hr |
| Per-output models | From $0.025 per image | Examples: FLUX Dev $0.025, FLUX Pro $0.04, Ideogram v3 $0.09 per image |
| Enterprise | Contact for pricing | Account manager, priority support, higher GPU limits, SLAs, volume discounts |
Some directories mention a free tier, but the official pricing page does not describe free credits, so we list Replicate as paid. Rates differ widely by model and hardware, so check the price shown on each model page before sending large batches.
What Makes Replicate Unique?
Replicate combines a huge public model catalogue with a simple way to publish your own models as APIs. Cog turns a research model into a hosted endpoint, and the same account can call tens of thousands of community and official models. The Cloudflare deal adds a route into Workers AI and a global network, while Replicate keeps its own brand and API. Few hosting platforms pair this breadth with per-second billing and no subscription.
Compatibilities and Integrations
- API and clients: HTTP API with token authentication, plus client libraries for several programming languages.
- Custom models: Cog, the open-source packaging tool for deploying your own models.
- Hardware: CPUs and Nvidia T4, L40S, A100, H100 and H200 GPUs.
- Cloudflare: Replicate models being made available to Cloudflare Workers AI users.
Replicate Tutorials
A first prediction on Replicate takes a few minutes once billing is set up.
- Create a Replicate account and add a payment method in billing settings.
- Copy your API token from the account page and store it as an environment variable.
- Browse the model catalogue and test a model in the web playground.
- Copy the code example from the model page and run it in your project.
- Watch the price and run time on each prediction, then set a spending limit.

| Overall Score | 4.1 | Average of the nine criteria |
Summary
Replicate suits developers and startups that want to add open-source AI models to products without running their own GPUs. Its main limitation is cold-start delay and per-second billing that can make costs and latency hard to predict. The Cloudflare deal has not changed the API so far, but watch for pricing updates. Test a model in the playground first and set a spending limit before sending production traffic.
