Claude Cowork

Claude Cowork is an agentic AI assistant from Anthropic that completes multi-step knowledge work in the files, folders and tools you approve. You describe an outcome, Claude plans subtasks and returns finished documents, spreadsheets or research. It runs on desktop, web and mobile. It needs a paid Claude plan from $17 a month and is merging into Claude.

What is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s agent for non-coding knowledge work: you describe an outcome, and Claude plans the steps, works in your chosen folders and tools, and hands back finished files for review. Anthropic’s help centre says it uses the same agentic architecture as Claude Code, without a terminal. It reads, edits and creates documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images and data files, breaks larger jobs into subtasks and runs parallel workstreams. Code runs in an isolated environment on Anthropic’s servers, and sessions can keep going after you close your laptop.

Cowork launched on 12 January 2026 as a research preview for Max subscribers on the macOS desktop app, with other plans on a waitlist, according to VentureBeat. Anthropic later added a plugin marketplace in February, enterprise deployment tools in April and a built-in browser in August 2026, and extended access to Pro, Team and Enterprise on Windows, web and mobile. On 16 September 2026 Anthropic announced that Cowork and chat are now one Claude, rolling out first to Pro and Max with Team and Free to follow. In October 2026 Cowork was therefore becoming part of the main Claude app rather than a separate mode.

Key Features

  • Outcome-based tasks: Claude Cowork takes a described outcome, writes a plan and splits the work into subtasks it completes on its own. You can step away and return to finished output instead of prompting each step.
  • Folder and file access: Claude Cowork reads, edits and creates files only inside the folders you choose on desktop. Supported types include Word, PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV, images, notebooks and common code files.
  • Connectors and plugins: Claude Cowork connects to tools such as Microsoft 365, Slack and Amplitude through connectors. Plugins from a marketplace launched in February 2026 bundle skills, connectors and sub-agents for specific jobs.
  • Scheduled tasks: Claude Cowork runs recurring jobs on daily, weekly or monthly schedules without your device being present. Anthropic’s examples include weekly marketing reports compiled from connected data sources.
  • Built-in browser: Claude Cowork gained its own browser in August 2026 for opening sites, filling forms and finishing web tasks. It works in the desktop app on Pro, Max and Team plans, and computer use is a separate research preview.
  • Permission modes: Claude Cowork offers Manual, Auto and Skip modes that control how often it asks before acting. Deletions always need your approval, and Auto mode runs safety checks before each step.
  • Cross-device sessions: Claude Cowork keeps cloud sessions in sync across desktop, web, iOS and Android. You can start a task on a laptop and steer it from your phone, although web and mobile were still in beta.
  • Parallel workstreams: Claude Cowork coordinates several pieces of a task at once rather than working strictly in sequence. Large jobs such as bulk contract review or account research finish faster as a result.
  • Enterprise controls: Claude Cowork gives Enterprise admins role-based access by team and streams activity to SIEM tools through OpenTelemetry. Deployment through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry supports data residency needs.

Pros

  • Finished work, not chat: Claude Cowork delivers edited files and completed reports rather than text you must copy into other apps. That removes much of the manual shuffling between a chatbot and your documents.
  • Clear access boundaries: Claude Cowork can reach only the folders and tools you grant, and it asks before deleting anything. You see each step as it runs and can redirect Claude mid-task.
  • Runs while you are away: Claude Cowork continues tasks in the cloud and runs scheduled jobs without your computer on. Weekly reports and recurring research can complete overnight without supervision.
  • Broad platform coverage: Claude Cowork works on macOS and Windows desktop apps, the web, iOS, Android and a Chrome side panel. Most teams can adopt it without changing operating systems or devices.
  • Extensible with plugins: Claude Cowork’s plugin marketplace adds bundled skills and connectors for specific roles. Teams can package their own workflows as plugins so colleagues get consistent results each time.
  • Strong admin options: Claude Cowork includes OpenTelemetry logging, team-level access controls and cloud deployment choices for Enterprise. Security teams get audit trails that many consumer AI agents do not offer.

Cons

  • Paid plans only: Claude Cowork requires a paid Claude subscription, starting at $17 a month billed yearly or $20 monthly for Pro. Free users were told access would follow the September 2026 merger at a later date.
  • Uses limits faster: Claude Cowork consumes usage limits faster than standard chat, according to Anthropic’s own product page. Heavy users on Pro may run into caps and need a Max plan at $100 or $200 a month.
  • Agent risks remain: Claude Cowork can take destructive actions such as deleting files if it misreads instructions, Anthropic warned at launch. Prompt injection from web content is also a known risk, so clear instructions and approval settings matter.
  • Features still in beta: Claude Cowork’s web and mobile apps, cloud execution and computer use were in beta or research preview. Expect behaviour and availability to change while the product folds into Claude.
  • Some gaps between modes: Claude Cowork did not carry chat memory into sessions outside projects and could not share sessions between users. Some features, such as local file access and the built-in browser, need the desktop app.
  • Product name in flux: Claude Cowork is being absorbed into the main Claude app after the September 2026 announcement. Guides, plan pages and support articles may describe it differently during the rollout.

Who is Using Claude Cowork?

  • Marketing teams: schedule weekly reports that pull figures from analytics connectors.
  • Legal professionals: review contracts in bulk against a playbook and prepare briefings.
  • Sales teams: research accounts and turn call notes into deal tracking files.
  • Finance analysts: build spreadsheets with variance analysis from source files.

What Makes Claude Cowork Unique?

Claude Cowork brings the agentic loop behind Claude Code to everyday office work, acting on local folders, connected apps and websites instead of only answering in a chat window. Its permission modes, folder boundaries and approval for deletions give you more control than a fully autonomous agent. Scheduled cloud tasks and the plugin marketplace let it run repeat jobs, and from September 2026 those abilities are becoming standard in Claude itself.

Compatibilities and Integrations

  • Platforms: Claude desktop apps for macOS and Windows, claude.ai on the web, iOS and Android apps, and a Chrome side panel.

  • Cloud deployment: Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry for Enterprise data residency.

Summary

Claude Cowork suits professionals and teams who want an AI agent to finish document, spreadsheet and research tasks inside their own files and tools. Its main limits are the paid-plan requirement, faster use of plan limits and the usual risks of an agent acting on your data. Because Anthropic is merging Cowork into the main Claude app, the name may fade while the capabilities become standard. Start in Manual mode with a test folder, and only widen access once you trust the results.
