What is Meta AI?
Meta AI is Meta’s free AI assistant, available inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, in the standalone Meta AI app, on the web at meta.ai and on Meta’s AI glasses. You can chat with it by text or voice, ask it to explain something you point your camera at, generate and edit images, shop Facebook Marketplace listings or build a simple website or mini-game from a prompt. It also appears in search bars, group chats and posts across Meta’s apps, so many people use it without installing anything new.
Meta AI has been rebuilt around Muse Spark, the first model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, announced on 8 April 2026. Muse Spark is multimodal, offers Instant and Thinking modes and can run several subagents in parallel on one question. Muse Image, Meta’s first image model from the same lab, followed in July 2026. Meta reported on its July 2026 earnings call that daily users of the assistant rose 60% after the rebuild. Meta also launched Muse, a separate personal AI agent, in September 2026.
Key Features
- Muse Spark model: Meta AI runs on Muse Spark, a multimodal model that Meta describes as small and fast by design. It reasons through science, maths and health questions, and can split one question across several subagents working in parallel.
- Instant and Thinking modes: Meta AI lets you switch between Instant mode for quick replies and Thinking mode for harder problems. Thinking takes longer but works through multi-step questions more carefully, which helps with planning, maths and comparisons.
- Built into Meta apps: Meta AI sits inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads, including search bars, group chats and posts. Side chats give a private answer based on what your group is discussing, without leaving the conversation.
- Muse Image generation: Meta AI creates and edits images with Muse Image, released in July 2026. You can erase objects, sketch edits directly on a photo, blend several photos and produce legible text for infographics or how-to guides.
- Voice and Live AI: Meta AI holds voice conversations where you can interrupt, change topic or switch language mid-sentence. Live AI lets you point your phone camera at something and ask about it in real time.
- Shopping and discovery: Meta AI searches Facebook Marketplace listings near you alongside wider web results, with a map and filters for price, style and distance. It also surfaces public posts from locals when you ask about places.
- Visual coding: Meta AI builds simple custom websites and mini-games from a written prompt, according to Meta’s Muse Spark announcement. This gives casual users a quick way to prototype an idea without writing any code.
- AI glasses assistant: Meta AI works hands-free on Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses. Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3) adds a customisable action button for instant access, and the assistant can see what you are looking at.
- Health answers: Meta AI gives more detailed health answers, including questions about images and charts, after Meta worked with physicians on Muse Spark. It is a starting point for understanding information rather than a substitute for medical advice.
Pros
- Free for everyday use: Meta AI costs nothing for normal use, and Meta states that this is not changing with Meta One. You get Muse Spark, image generation and voice chat without a subscription.
- Already in your apps: Meta AI lives inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, so there is nothing new to install for most people. You can ask a question in the same chat where you are already planning something with friends.
- Strong multimodal skills: Meta AI understands photos, live camera views and charts, not just typed text. That makes it useful for identifying objects, reading menus or checking a chart someone shared in a group chat.
- Capable image editing: Meta AI’s Muse Image model handles object removal, sketch-based edits and readable text in images. Casual creators can fix a holiday photo or make a simple infographic without opening a separate design app.
- Hands-free on glasses: Meta AI turns Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses into a voice assistant that sees what you see. You can ask questions while walking, cooking or travelling without taking out your phone.
- Fast-moving development: Meta AI received Muse Spark in April, Muse Image in July and wider glasses support through 2026. Meta says larger models are in development, so the assistant is likely to keep improving.
Cons
- Training on your chats: Meta uses eligible interactions with its AI to train models by default, according to coverage of the Muse launch. You need to find and change the opt-out setting if you do not want that.
- Uneven rollout: Meta AI often launches new features in the US first, with other countries following later. Muse Image on WhatsApp started in limited countries, so features described here may not appear in your region yet.
- Paid creation limits: Meta AI caps heavy image and video generation for free users, with more room on Meta One Core at $7.99 or Premium at $19.99 a month. Meta does not publish the exact numeric limits for each plan.
- Confusing product names: Meta AI, Muse Spark, Muse Image and the separate Muse agent all launched in 2026. New users may struggle to tell which product handles chat, images or autonomous tasks, and which ones cost money.
- Agent tasks sit elsewhere: Meta AI answers and creates, but booking travel, sending email and filling forms belong to Muse, a separate agent. Muse is limited to the US and Canada, so most users cannot hand off real tasks yet.
Who is Using Meta AI?
- Everyday messaging users: They ask quick questions, plan trips and settle debates inside WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram chats.
- Casual creators: They generate and edit images with Muse Image for Stories, posts and simple infographics.
- AI glasses owners: They use hands-free voice and camera features on Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses.
- Shoppers and locals: They search Facebook Marketplace and local posts for products, places and recommendations.

What Makes Meta AI Unique?
Distribution is the concrete difference. Meta AI is already inside the messaging and social apps billions of people open every day, plus smart glasses that can see what the wearer sees. Rivals such as ChatGPT and Gemini mostly need their own app or browser tab, whereas Meta AI answers inside a WhatsApp group chat, an Instagram search bar or a pair of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, with the same Muse Spark model behind each.
Compatibilities and Integrations
- Meta apps: WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads, including search bars, chats and group side chats.
- Standalone access: The Meta AI app and the web at meta.ai.
- Wearables: Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and Meta Ray-Ban Display AI glasses.
- Developers and business: Muse Spark API opened in private preview, with Muse Spark 1.1 reported on a public API in July 2026; Muse Image in Advantage+ creative.

Summary
Meta AI suits anyone who already lives in WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook and wants a free assistant without installing another app. Its main drawback is privacy, because chats feed Meta’s model training unless you opt out, and new features often reach the US first. Power users needing deep integrations with work tools may prefer ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. Before relying on it, check your AI training setting and keep sensitive details out of every chat.
