Claude Code

Claude Code is an agentic coding tool from Anthropic that reads a codebase, edits files, runs commands and opens pull requests from plain-language requests. It works in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, a desktop app, the web and Slack. It is aimed at developers and engineering teams. Access comes with paid Claude plans from $17 a month, or API billing.

What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool: it reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and works with your development tools from instructions written in plain language. You describe a bug, feature or chore, and it plans the change, writes code across files and checks the result.

It started as a terminal program and now runs on several surfaces that share one engine. The official documentation lists a command-line tool, extensions for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, a desktop app for macOS and Windows, a browser version at claude.ai/code and access from the Claude mobile apps. Settings, CLAUDE.md instruction files and MCP servers carry across all of them.

Anthropic builds and sells it as part of its Claude subscriptions, and it can also be billed through the Anthropic Console or several cloud providers. The free Claude plan does not include it. Typical work ranges from bug fixes, tests and lint clean-ups to refactors, migrations and multi-hour tasks that you supervise and review.

Key Features

Whole-codebase awareness is what separates Claude Code from autocomplete tools, since it explores files itself rather than waiting for you to select context.

  • Codebase exploration: Claude Code maps and explains a project without you choosing files by hand. It follows imports across files and repositories, which helps when you join an unfamiliar codebase.
  • Edits, commands and git: It writes code across multiple files, runs tests and shell commands, then stages changes and writes commit messages. It can also create branches and open pull requests for your review.
  • CLAUDE.md, skills and hooks: A CLAUDE.md file in the project root sets coding standards that are read at the start of every session. Skills package repeatable workflows, and hooks run shell commands before or after actions.
  • Model Context Protocol: MCP servers connect Claude Code to outside tools and data. The docs give examples such as design documents in Google Drive, tickets in Jira and messages in Slack.
  • Parallel agents: Subagents can split a task while a lead agent coordinates and merges the results. Background agents and the web version let several full sessions run side by side.
  • Scheduling and automation: Routines run in the cloud on a schedule or after GitHub events, even with your computer off. A print mode also lets you pipe logs into Claude Code or run it inside CI jobs.

Pros

Agentic depth is why developers pick Claude Code: it can carry a task from reading the code through running tests to opening a pull request.

  • Handles whole tasks: It plans, edits, runs tests and fixes failures in one loop rather than suggesting single lines. Developers spend more time reviewing changes and less time typing routine code.
  • Works where you work: The same engine runs in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop, web, mobile and Slack. You can start a task on one surface and continue it on another.
  • Highly configurable: CLAUDE.md files, skills, hooks, subagents and the Agent SDK let teams shape its behaviour. Standards and workflows can be checked into the repository and shared by everyone.
  • Enterprise deployment choices: Organisations can pay through Claude Team or Enterprise plans, or route usage through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry. Security teams can enforce managed permissions that local settings cannot override.
  • Strong documentation: The official docs cover installation, everyday workflows, security settings and troubleshooting in close detail. Anthropic also offers free self-paced courses through Claude Academy, including Claude Code 101.

Cons

Cost scales quickly with heavy use, because Pro is pitched at short sessions and larger codebases push you towards Max plans from $100 a month.

  • No free tier: The free Claude plan does not include Claude Code, so trying it needs a paid plan or API credit. Hobbyists may find the entry cost harder to justify than free autocomplete tools.
  • Shared usage limits: Paid plans share one usage pool between chat and Claude Code. Long agentic sessions can use that allowance quickly, so heavy users often need a Max plan or API billing.
  • Review is still essential: An agent that edits files and runs commands can make wrong or risky changes. Use permission settings, version control and code review rather than accepting changes without reading them.
  • Learning curve: The terminal, CLAUDE.md, hooks, MCP and subagents give a lot of control but take time to learn. Newcomers may find the desktop app or VS Code extension easier at first.
  • Some features need a subscription: Features such as teleporting web sessions to the terminal and the desktop handoff require a claude.ai subscription. Teams billing only through cloud providers should check feature availability first.

Who is Using Claude Code?

Professional developers and engineering teams form Claude Code’s core audience, and its product page quotes engineers at Ramp and Notion.

  • Software engineers: Engineers use it for bug fixes, tests, refactors and new features. Many pair it with their IDE so they can review diffs inline before committing.
  • Engineering teams: Teams share CLAUDE.md files, skills and MCP settings through the repository. This keeps conventions consistent across many developers and sessions.
  • DevOps and platform staff: Platform teams run it in GitHub Actions or GitLab CI/CD for review and triage. Routines handle recurring jobs such as dependency audits.
  • Enterprises: Larger organisations deploy it with SSO, managed settings and cloud provider billing. Some run cloud sessions on their own infrastructure through self-hosted environments.

Disclaimer: Anthropic revises plans and usage limits often, so check claude.com/pricing for the figures that apply to your account today.

What Makes Claude Code Unique?

One engine behind every surface is the concrete differentiator, so the same CLAUDE.md files, settings and MCP servers follow you everywhere. A session can begin in the terminal, move to the desktop app for visual diffs and continue on a phone. Many coding assistants live inside a single editor.

Its extension model is the second difference. Skills, hooks, subagents, plugins and the Agent SDK let teams build their own workflows on top of the same tools Claude Code uses, while managed settings let security teams set limits centrally.

Compatibilities and Integrations

Git, CI pipelines, IDEs and MCP servers are where Claude Code plugs in, alongside billing through four cloud platforms.

  • Platforms: The CLI runs on macOS, Linux, Windows and WSL. The desktop app covers macOS and Windows, with a Linux beta on Ubuntu and Debian.
  • IDEs: Extensions exist for VS Code and Cursor, plus a plugin for JetBrains IDEs such as IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm. The JetBrains plugin needs the CLI installed separately.
  • CI and chat: GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD support automated review and triage. Mentioning Claude in Slack can turn a bug report into a pull request.
  • MCP and SDK: MCP connects outside tools such as Jira and Google Drive. The Agent SDK lets you build custom agents on Claude Code’s capabilities.
  • Cloud providers: Usage can run through Amazon Bedrock, Claude Platform on AWS, Google Cloud’s Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry. Each uses that cloud’s own billing and access controls.

Claude Code Tutorials

Installing the CLI and running it inside a project takes six steps on a paid Claude account.

  1. Subscribe to a paid Claude plan or set up an Anthropic Console account.
  2. Install the CLI with the native installer, Homebrew or WinGet, then run claude –version.
  3. Open a terminal in your project folder, type claude and sign in when prompted.
  4. Ask it to explain the codebase, then add a CLAUDE.md file with your coding standards.
  5. Give it a small task, such as writing tests for one module, and review each change.
  6. Ask it to commit the work or open a pull request once the tests pass.

How We Rated It

Breadth of features lifts Claude Code to 4.4, while the lack of a free tier and shared usage caps pull down its cost score.

Criterion Score Why
Accuracy and Reliability 4.4/5 Strong, still needs review
Ease of Use 4.0/5 Terminal first, easier surfaces
Functionality and Features 4.8/5 Agents, MCP, hooks, scheduling
Performance and Speed 4.3/5 Fast mode, long tasks
Customization and Flexibility 4.7/5 Skills, hooks, SDK, settings
Data Privacy and Security 4.2/5 Local runs, managed permissions
Support and Resources 4.5/5 Detailed docs, free courses
Cost-Efficiency 3.6/5 No free tier, usage caps
Integration Capabilities 4.7/5 IDEs, CI, cloud providers
Overall Score 4.4/5 Average of the nine criteria

Summary

Claude Code suits professional developers and engineering teams who want an agent that can read a codebase, make multi-file changes, run tests and open pull requests. Its main limitation is cost, since the free plan excludes it and heavy users soon need Max plans or API billing. It is highly configurable, with CLAUDE.md files, skills, hooks and MCP, but that depth takes time to learn. We rate it among the most capable coding agents for teams that review its work carefully. Start on Pro with a small, well-tested repository, write a short CLAUDE.md first and upgrade only once you know your usage.
