What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s AI assistant that answers questions, writes and edits text, creates images, analyses files and writes code from plain-language prompts. OpenAI released it on 30 November 2022, and it now runs on the GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 model families.
It works by turning your prompt into tokens and generating a reply with a transformer-based language model.
Key Features
ChatGPT’s key features are web search, deep research reports with sources, image creation, voice chat, file analysis, custom GPTs with projects and memory, and ChatGPT Work and Codex for longer tasks and coding.
- Web search: Pulls current information from the internet into answers, so replies are not limited to what the model learned in training.
- Deep research: Returns a structured, multi-step report with sources. Access is limited on Free, expanded on Plus and at its maximum on Pro.
- Image creation: Generates and edits images from a text prompt inside the same chat. Free has a limited allowance, Go and Plus raise it, and Pro lists unlimited faster image creation.
- Voice and file analysis: Talks in real time and reads uploaded documents, spreadsheets and images, then summarises, extracts or charts what is in them.
- Custom GPTs, projects and memory: Shape ChatGPT around a repeated task. Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs are listed from the Plus plan, and memory grows with each tier.
- Work mode and Codex: Complete longer multi-step tasks and write or review code. Free includes limited Codex and limited ChatGPT Work access on desktop, and Pro adds longer Codex sessions.
- Automatic model routing: Sends each prompt to a suitable model, using faster models for simple questions and reasoning models for harder ones. Plus adds advanced reasoning models with GPT-6.
- Connectors: Link ChatGPT to tools such as Google Drive, OneDrive and SharePoint, so it can find and use your files inside a chat.
Pros
ChatGPT’s main advantages are that one product covers writing, research, coding, images and voice, the Free plan includes unlimited text chats, plans run from $0 to $500 a month, and it works on web, mobile and desktop.
- One tool for most AI tasks: Writing, research, coding, images and voice sit in one product, which removes the need for several separate subscriptions.
- Usable free plan: Free includes unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and Codex.
- Wide plan range: Plans run from $0 to $500 a month, with Go at $8 for people who only need higher limits and Plus at $20 for advanced reasoning models.
- Works everywhere: Available on web, mobile and desktop, with chats synced across devices.
- Fits your workflow: Custom GPTs, projects, scheduled tasks and connectors let you set ChatGPT up around a specific job from the Plus plan upward.
- Business data controls: Business and Enterprise plans exclude your data from model training by default and add admin controls and single sign-on.
Cons
ChatGPT’s main drawbacks are that answers can be wrong, the strongest models and research allowances need Plus or Pro, lower tiers may show ads, usage limits are not published, and personal-plan privacy settings need checking.
- Answers need checking: ChatGPT can give wrong or outdated information, so check anything factual, legal, medical or financial against an original source.
- Best features are paid: Top reasoning models and larger research allowances need Plus at $20 a month or Pro from $100. Pro reasoning on GPT-6 Astra is only on Pro.
- Ads on lower tiers: Free and Go may show ads. OpenAI’s pricing page notes that the Go plan may include ads.
- Limits are not published: The pricing page describes Free features as “limited” and paid ones as “more” or “expanded” without numbers, and adds that limits apply.
- Confusing line-up: Pro comes in three usage tiers on top of Go, Plus and Business, which makes plans hard to compare. OpenAI’s help centre also says new sign-ups to the $200 tier are paused.
- Privacy needs attention: Personal-plan chats can be used for model training unless you switch this off in the data controls.
Who is Using ChatGPT?
- Students and educators: Explain topics and plan lessons.
- Writers and marketers: Draft, edit and outline content.
- Developers and analysts: Write and debug code, analyse data.
- Businesses and support teams: Draft replies, proposals and documents.
