What is Artbreeder?
Artbreeder is a browser-based AI image tool that creates new pictures by mixing prompts, uploaded images and existing artwork. Instead of relying on one prompt, you combine ingredients and adjust them until the result looks right. People use it for portraits, characters, landscapes and concept art, and the workflow rewards small, deliberate changes over random rerolls.
It grew out of Ganbreeder, a project by developer Joel Simon. The original GAN-based blending has since given way to newer image models. Its pricing page lists Composer for prompt and image mixing and Splicer for breeding images, with SDXL credits on paid tiers. The service was live and selling subscriptions when we checked in October 2026.
Key Features
- Composer: Composer blends a text prompt with one or more reference images to create a new picture. Paid plans list unlimited Composer generation, so you can iterate on an idea as often as you like.
- Splicer: Splicer breeds images by mixing parents and adjusting traits with sliders. Small nudges, such as ageing a face or warming a palette, change the result gradually, and paid plans add a fast Splicer mode.
- SDXL credits: Paid tiers include yearly SDXL credits, from 1,200 on Starter to 8,400 on Champion. Artbreeder estimates these cover roughly 12,000 to 84,000 SDXL images a year.
- Extra image tools: Capterra lists a tuner, a patterns tool and a collage builder alongside the image mixer. These give extra ways to shape compositions, textures and layouts without leaving the site.
- Photo uploads: You can upload your own photos as references for blending. Writers and designers can base characters or scenes on existing sketches or images rather than describing everything in text.
- Privacy controls: Paid members can keep creations private instead of sharing them publicly. This matters for client work, unreleased game art or personal portraits. Free accounts do not include this control.
- Google Drive sync: Paid plans copy generated images to Google Drive. Your output library stays backed up and easy to share with collaborators who do not use Artbreeder.
- Community sharing: Artbreeder runs a community where users share images and enter contests, according to Futurepedia. Shared artwork can also serve as a starting point for your own blends.
Pros
- Hands-on control: Sliders give finer direction than a single prompt. You can steer an image step by step, which makes small, predictable changes easier than with prompt-only generators.
- Low entry price: Starter costs $7.49 a month, billed at $89.88 a year, and removes ads. A free account is also available for trying the core tools before paying.
- Generous allowances: Higher tiers cover tens of thousands of SDXL images a year, and Composer use is unlimited on paid plans. Heavy users rarely hit a hard ceiling.
- Character work: Artbreeder suits portraits, faces and characters, a common use among writers and game masters. A Capterra reviewer praised its original, realistic images and how easily two images can be blended.
- Runs in a browser: No software installation is needed, and it works in desktop and mobile browsers. Projects are reachable from any connected device, which Futurepedia lists as a benefit.
Cons
- Credit maths: Credits are quoted as yearly totals with estimated image counts. Comparing tiers or predicting monthly use is harder than with a simple per-image or monthly allowance.
- Privacy is paid: Privacy controls sit behind the paid tiers. Free users who want to keep work private must upgrade, so avoid uploading sensitive photos on a free account.
- Ads on free: Only paid plans remove adverts. The free account works for experiments, but regular users may find the ads distracting during longer sessions. Removing them costs at least $7.49 a month.
- Few integrations: Google Drive sync is the main external link. Futurepedia rates integrations as its weakest area, so moving images into design tools usually means manual downloads.
- Occasional unsuitable output: A Capterra reviewer reported that Artbreeder sometimes generates inappropriate or offensive images. Anyone creating content for clients or younger audiences should review every result before sharing it.

What Makes Artbreeder Unique?
Slider-based breeding lets you nudge an image gradually instead of rewriting a prompt. Small changes, such as ageing a face or warming a palette, become easy and predictable. That approach, inherited from Ganbreeder, feels closer to sculpting than gambling. Few prompt-only generators give you this sense of steering a picture step by step.
Compatibilities and Integrations
- Platforms: Desktop and mobile web browsers.
- Cloud storage: Google Drive sync on paid plans.
- Uploads: Use your own photos as references.
