What is Mindy?
Mindy was an AI assistant that lived behind an email address, replying to requests with researched answers, summaries and drafts. You wrote to [email protected] or copied it into a thread, then waited for its reply.
The idea was to let people use AI without learning prompts or installing anything. TechCrunch’s February 2024 coverage gave examples such as finding local events with ticket links, or returning Apple’s revenue for the last eight quarters as a table. Mindy worked asynchronously, so it could spend time on a task and answer later, much like a human assistant would.
Yu Pan, Cuong Do and Benoit Berthoux founded the company, and Pan and Do had been early engineers at PayPal and YouTube. TechCrunch reported a $6 million seed round led by Sequoia Capital with Founders Fund, and a team of about 10 people at the time. The farewell note now on mindy.com says the product later widened into content management for creative and marketing teams. In June 2026 WorkWhile, a labour platform for hourly workers, licensed the technology and hired the team, and the public service ended.
Key Features
Email as the entire interface defined Mindy: every feature below ran through ordinary messages, so any mail client on any device was enough to use it.
- Email interface: You sent a request to Mindy’s address and the answer arrived as a normal reply. Because the exchange stayed in your mailbox, past answers were searchable alongside the rest of your correspondence.
- Web research: Mindy searched the web and returned a summarised answer rather than a list of links. TechCrunch described requests for financial figures that came back formatted as a table, ready to paste into notes.
- Thread assistance: Copying Mindy into an existing conversation let it read the context and add a draft or background facts. This suited busy threads where you wanted a quick briefing before replying yourself.
- Document summaries: Directories such as Deepgram’s app listing say Mindy condensed long documents sent to it. The summary came back by email, which made it easy to forward to colleagues who lacked time to read the source.
- Scheduling and reminders: Futurepedia and Deepgram list help with calendar updates, meeting arrangements and reminders. These features were reported by directories, and we could not check how far they went before the service closed.
- Asynchronous tasks: Mindy did not need you to wait in a chat window while it worked. You could send a multi-step request, carry on with other jobs and read a finished answer when it arrived.
Pros
Zero setup was Mindy’s main draw: if you could write an email, you could use it, with no app, account dashboard or prompt technique to learn first.
- Familiar workflow: People already comfortable with email needed no training at all. That made Mindy a gentle first step into AI for staff who found chat tools intimidating or unfamiliar.
- Works on any device: Phones, laptops and webmail all handled Mindy the same way. You could send a request from a mobile mail app while travelling and read the answer later at a desk.
- Answers you keep: Replies stayed in your inbox as permanent records. Unlike chat sessions that scroll away, each answer could be filed, labelled or forwarded with your normal email habits.
- Experienced founding team: Two founders had helped build PayPal and YouTube in their early years. Their backing from Sequoia and Founders Fund gave early users some confidence in the product’s direction.
- Free while it ran: TechCrunch reported that Mindy charged nothing while the company worked out its business model. Early users therefore tested it with no cost or card details required.
Cons
Closure is the decisive drawback: since the June 2026 WorkWhile deal, mindy.com shows only a farewell note and no new requests are handled.
- Service has ended: You can no longer sign up or send tasks to Mindy. Anyone who relied on it needs a replacement, and any workflows built around its address will now fail silently.
- Slow round trips: Each answer depended on an email being sent, processed and returned. For quick questions this felt slower than a chat tool that responds within seconds on screen.
- Conflicting integration claims: Some directories reported no public API, while Futurepedia lists Trello, Asana and a custom API. We could not confirm either view on an official page, so treat those listings with caution.
- Unclear data handling: Mindy read whatever you sent or copied it into, including thread history. No privacy policy for stored emails remains published, so former users cannot easily check what happened to that data.
- Shallow on complex work: An email format suited single requests better than back-and-forth refinement. Editing a long draft or narrowing a research question took several messages, which slowed detailed jobs.
Who is Using Mindy?
Nobody can use Mindy today, but during 2024 and 2025 its users were mostly busy professionals wanting delegated research without a new app.
- Executives: Senior staff passed Mindy research and admin requests by email. They used it like a junior assistant for briefings, figures and draft replies.
- Consultants and researchers: Professionals sent factual questions and got back summarised answers. Tables of figures and short briefings were common requests in reported examples.
- Small teams: Groups copied Mindy into shared threads for background and drafts. It acted as an assistant that everyone on the thread could see and use.
- Non-technical users: People wary of prompt writing found plain email easier. Deepgram’s listing also names students and remote workers among its intended audience.
Pricing
Mindy is discontinued, and there is no plan you can buy today (status checked October 2026).
| Plan | Price | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Early access | $0 | Free during testing, as reported in 2024 |
| Paid tiers | Never published officially | Directories list conflicting figures |
| Current service | Not available | Website shows a farewell note only |
Futurepedia still lists a $20 monthly premium tier and another directory mentions plans from $29, but none of these appear on an official Mindy page and all predate the closure.
Disclaimer: any Mindy price you see on a third-party site is historical at best, so do not rely on it.
What Makes Mindy Unique?
An email address was the whole product, with no app, dashboard or chat window. That choice made Mindy unusually easy to adopt and let it work on tasks in the background, then answer when ready.
Most assistants that followed, such as Gemini in Gmail, sit inside one provider’s inbox. Mindy worked across any provider because it was simply another contact. Its technology now sits inside WorkWhile’s workforce platform, aimed at hourly workers and employers rather than individual productivity.
Compatibilities and Integrations
Any email client was compatible with Mindy, because it took requests and sent answers as standard messages rather than through a plug-in.
- Email clients: Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail and mobile mail apps all worked, since nothing needed installing.
- Calendars and tasks: Directories report Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar, Trello and Asana links, which we could not verify.
- API: Listings disagree on whether a public API existed, and none is documented today.
- Data: Answers remained in your mailbox as ordinary emails you could export.
- Successor: The technology was licensed to WorkWhile for enterprise workforce use.
Mindy Tutorials
Moving off Mindy is now the only practical task, and it takes about an hour if you follow these steps.
- Search your mailbox for past Mindy replies and save the useful ones.
- Remove Mindy’s address from filters, contacts and shared threads.
- List the jobs Mindy handled, such as research, summaries or scheduling.
- Trial an alternative like Lindy, Perplexity or Gemini in Gmail for those jobs.
- Read each alternative’s privacy terms before giving it access to your inbox.
- Run the new tool for a week before deleting old Mindy material.
How We Rated It
Mindy earns 3.0 out of 5: ease of use was excellent, but slow email replies, thin integrations and the closed service pull the score down.
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy and Reliability | 3.2/5 | Useful but occasionally shallow |
| Ease of Use | 4.3/5 | Just send an email |
| Functionality and Features | 3.0/5 | Research and drafts only |
| Performance and Speed | 2.8/5 | Email replies took time |
| Customization and Flexibility | 2.7/5 | Few settings to adjust |
| Data Privacy and Security | 2.9/5 | Policy no longer published |
| Support and Resources | 2.0/5 | Service and help ended |
| Cost-Efficiency | 3.8/5 | Free while it ran |
| Integration Capabilities | 2.4/5 | No confirmed API |
| Overall Score | 3.0/5 | Average of the nine criteria |
Summary
Mindy was a good fit for professionals who wanted AI research and drafts without leaving their inbox. Its email-only design made it easy to start, though replies were slower than chat tools. The main limitation now is simple: the service closed after the June 2026 WorkWhile deal. If you used it, export the replies you value before anything else. Then test a replacement on your real tasks for a week before committing.
