Notion AI

Notion AI is the AI assistant built into the Notion workspace. It drafts, writes and edits pages, answers questions from your notes and connected apps, takes meeting notes and runs agents that complete multi-step tasks. Free and Plus plans include a limited trial, while full access comes with the Business plan at $20 per seat a month when billed annually.

What is Notion AI?

Notion AI is the set of AI features built into Notion, the workspace app for notes, documents and projects. It writes and edits content, answers questions about your workspace and can act on your behalf through agents.

It works by combining language models from providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic with the content of your own pages and connected tools, so answers draw on your team’s information.

Key Features

Notion AI combines an agent that completes multi-step tasks, bot-free meeting notes, search across connected apps and writing tools, all inside the Notion pages your team already uses.

  • Notion Agent: Completes complex, multi-step tasks using context from your Notion workspace, your connected apps and the web. One instruction can build a database, reorganise pages or draft a document.
  • Custom Agents: Run repeatable jobs for the whole team once someone sets them up, such as meeting follow-ups. They are billed through Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 credits a month after a free trial.
  • AI Meeting Notes: Transcribes meetings without adding a bot to the call, then writes the summary and action items on the page where your team already works.
  • Enterprise Search: Searches Notion together with connected apps including Slack, Google Drive and GitHub, and returns an answer in seconds. Notion labels this feature as beta on its pricing page.
  • Research Mode: Generates detailed reports and summaries on a topic, which suits briefs, competitor notes and background research that would otherwise take several searches.
  • Writing and editing: AI blocks draft, improve, summarise and translate text directly inside a page, so you do not paste content into a separate chatbot.
  • Database autofill: Fills database properties such as summaries and tags automatically, which keeps large project and content databases current without manual entry.
  • Permission-aware answers: Respects existing workspace access controls, so the AI cannot show a user information they do not have permission to view.

Pros

Notion AI’s main advantages are that it works inside the workspace your team already uses, answers from your own content and comes with documented privacy commitments.

  • No app switching: The AI sits on the same pages as your documents, tasks and databases, so drafting, summarising and searching happen without opening another tool.
  • Answers from your own content: Responses draw on your workspace and connected apps such as Slack, Google Drive and GitHub, not only on general web knowledge.
  • Agents take action: Notion Agent creates and updates pages and databases. A general chatbot returns text that you still have to paste and organise yourself.
  • Bot-free meeting notes: Meetings are transcribed and summarised without a recording bot joining the call, which avoids a common objection from clients and guests.
  • No training on your data: Notion states that it and its AI providers do not use customer data to train models by default, and that Notion AI falls within its SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 scope.
  • Strong Enterprise controls: Enterprise workspaces get zero data retention with AI providers, and Notion says this also enables HIPAA-compliant use.
  • Try before you pay: Free and Plus plans include a trial of AI capabilities such as generating documents and autofilling databases.

Cons

Notion AI’s main drawbacks are cost and lock-in: full access needs the Business plan at $20 per seat a month, and the AI only helps if your work already lives in Notion.

  • Full access costs $20 a seat: Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search require the Business plan for every member. A team of ten pays $200 a month on annual billing.
  • Trial only on Free and Plus: Lower plans get a limited trial of AI features, not ongoing access, and Notion does not publish the exact allowance on its pricing page.
  • Tied to Notion: The AI works on content stored in or connected to Notion. Teams that keep documents in other tools get little value from it.
  • Custom agents cost extra: After the free trial, custom agents consume credits priced at $10 per 1,000 a month, on top of the seat price.
  • Data retention below Enterprise: On non-Enterprise plans, AI providers may retain data for up to 30 days. Zero retention is limited to Enterprise workspaces.
  • Search is still in beta: Notion lists Enterprise Search as a beta feature, so connector coverage and behaviour may change.

Who is Using Notion AI?

  • Teams on Notion: Summarise notes and find answers fast.
  • Product and project managers: Turn discussions into tasks and documents.
  • Writers and marketers: Draft and edit content.
  • Students: Organise research and study notes.

What Makes Notion AI Unique?

Notion AI stands out because it works on your own knowledge base. A general chatbot starts from a blank page, while Notion AI already has your documents, databases and meeting notes to draw on.

Compatibilities and Integrations

  • Platforms: Web, desktop and mobile Notion apps.
  • Connected search: Slack, Google Drive and other tools.
  • Automation: Works with Zapier and the Notion API.
  • Security: Zero data retention option on Enterprise.
