Option Alpha

Option Alpha is an options trading automation platform that lets you build, backtest and run rule-based trading bots without code. Bots run in the cloud and place orders through a linked broker such as TradeStation, tastytrade, Tradier or Schwab. It works in any web browser, without downloads. Pro costs $99 a month billed annually, and broker-sponsored plans are free.

What is Option Alpha?

Option Alpha is a browser-based platform for building, backtesting and automating options and stock trades without writing code. You define rules in a visual builder, test them on historical data, then let bots place orders through a linked brokerage account.

Bots run on Option Alpha’s servers, so they keep working when your computer is off. Automations act as each bot’s instruction set: they scan the market, check conditions, open positions and manage exits. Built-in safeguards cap each bot at ten open positions and ten new positions per trading day, and bots can open risk-defined positions only.

Option Alpha, LLC is based in St. Petersburg, Florida, and reviews name Kirk Du Plessis as its founder. The homepage reports more than 10,000 active traders and over 100,000 active bots. It is software rather than a broker, and its terms promise no profit. Nothing in this review is investment advice: options can lose money quickly, and automation does not reduce that risk.

Key Features

Backtesting and server-side bots matter most in Option Alpha, because together they let you check a rule set on past data and then run it unattended.

  • No-code bot builder: Bots open and close trades according to rules assembled from conditions, inputs and actions. Public templates and a community leaderboard also let you clone an existing bot with one click and adjust its settings.
  • Unlimited backtesting: Pro and broker-sponsored plans include unlimited backtests of strategy variations, including 0DTE setups. Thousands of community backtests are also browsable, which gives you a starting point before testing your own entry and exit rules.
  • 0DTE Oracle: This tool ranks same-day and next-day trades on SPX, SPY, XSP and QQQ by backtesting today’s exact setups. It tests strikes up to 3 per cent out of the money against a year of minute-level price data.
  • Trade Ideas: A database of pre-calculated trades refreshes every minute during market hours and ranks ideas by expected value. You can filter by return on capital, bid-ask spread and probability of profit to narrow the list.
  • SmartPricing: Orders start near the midpoint of the bid-ask spread and step towards the worst price you will accept. Normal, Fast and Patient modes set the number and length of attempts, such as five 20-second steps in Patient mode.
  • Webhooks and paper trading: Webhooks let TradingView, TrendSpider, Zapier or Python scripts trigger bot automations from outside signals. Paper trading runs bots on live market data without a broker, so you can watch their behaviour before any money is involved.

Pros

Free access through a funded broker account is Option Alpha’s strongest selling point, since TradeStation, Tradier and tastytrade customers get Pro-level limits at no cost.

  • Rules without code: Traders can automate a written plan without learning Python or broker APIs. The visual builder turns conditions such as price, indicators or days to expiry into actions a bot carries out consistently.
  • Free broker-sponsored route: Tradier and tastytrade accounts with $5,000, or TradeStation accounts with $10,000, qualify for a $0 plan. These plans keep the 50 bots, $100k per-bot cap and unlimited backtests that Pro buyers pay for.
  • Practice before risking money: A 30-day full-featured trial and paper trading let you test bots on live data first. You can watch a strategy for several weeks before connecting a brokerage account or committing capital.
  • Built-in safeguards: Bots are limited to ten open positions, ten new positions a day and risk-defined trades only. Scanners also switch off when allocation limits are reached, which reduces the damage a faulty rule can do.
  • Education and community: Free courses, live workshops and a fast-track onboarding programme cover options from the basics. Public bot templates and a leaderboard let newer traders study how experienced users structure their rules.

Cons

Automation magnifies mistakes: an Option Alpha bot will execute a flawed rule set with real money just as faithfully as a sound one.

  • Real financial losses: Bots trade live capital, and backtests cannot predict future markets. A poorly designed strategy can lose money quickly, so treat every result as an estimate and size positions conservatively.
  • Learning curve: No coding is needed, but sensible bots still demand knowledge of strikes, expiries, spreads and position sizing. Beginners should expect weeks of paper trading and study before running anything live.
  • Narrow broker list: Only TradeStation, tastytrade, Tradier and Charles Schwab connect for live trading. The pricing FAQ also states that no current broker integration supports Canadian traders, which rules out automation there.
  • Limited markets: The platform covers stocks, ETFs and options, and safeguards restrict bots to risk-defined positions. Reviews report no futures or forex support, so traders in those markets need a different tool.
  • Costly without a broker deal: Pro costs $149 month to month, or $99 a month on annual billing. Traders who cannot meet the sponsored-plan minimums pay a sizeable fixed fee before any trading results arrive.

Who is Using Option Alpha?

Self-directed US options traders with a defined plan form Option Alpha’s core audience, and the homepage counts more than 10,000 of them as active.

  • Experienced options traders: Traders who already follow written rules turn them into bots. Automated exits and SmartPricing help them apply the same discipline on every trade.
  • Part-time traders: People with day jobs cannot watch the market constantly. Server-side bots manage entries, profit targets and stop-losses while they are at work.
  • Short-dated index traders: Traders of same-day SPX, SPY and QQQ options use the 0DTE Oracle to compare setups. Backtests help them check entry times and spread widths first.
  • Learners: Newer traders use free courses, cloned templates and paper trading to practise. They can study strategies without placing real capital at risk.

Disclaimer: broker minimums and plan terms change from time to time, and none of these figures is investment advice.

What Makes Option Alpha Unique?

Option Alpha joins three jobs that retail traders usually split across tools: finding trades, testing them and executing them. Trade Ideas and the 0DTE Oracle surface candidates, the backtester checks them, and the same rule set then runs as a bot on Option Alpha’s servers.

The execution layer is the less obvious difference. SmartPricing works through the bid-ask spread in timed steps instead of sending a single limit order, which matters on options where spreads can be wide. Safeguards that block undefined-risk positions also keep automated trading within known maximum losses per position.

Compatibilities and Integrations

Option Alpha runs in a web browser and connects to four US brokers, with webhooks bringing in signals from outside charting tools.

  • Platform: Browser-based with no download; we found no native mobile app listed.
  • Brokers: TradeStation, tastytrade, Tradier and Charles Schwab. Sponsored free plans exclude Schwab and allow a single broker.
  • Webhooks: Signals from TradingView, TrendSpider, Zapier or Python can trigger automations in one or several bots.
  • Assets: Stocks, ETFs and options, with bots limited to risk-defined positions.
  • Security: Two-factor login, TLS encryption and OAuth broker connections. Option Alpha does not hold client funds.

Data Privacy and Security 4.0/5 2FA, TLS, OAuth broker links

Overall Score 3.9/5 Average of the nine criteria

Summary

Option Alpha suits options traders who understand risk and want a written plan applied the same way every time. Its backtester, 0DTE Oracle and SmartPricing give it more depth than most retail automation tools. The main limitation is that automation magnifies bad rules as readily as good ones, and losses remain possible with any strategy. Broker choice is also narrow, and Canadian traders cannot automate at present. Keep every new bot in paper trading until it has worked through several different market conditions.
